It happens in spasms: a twinged look at the calendar and I realize that I haven't sent anything out for awhile. Quite awhile. So I poke around on the internet, searching for magazines that have calls for submissions, or at journals that seem healthy, and at other ones that look wanting. And then I troll through my story files, thinking about what might fly with what, or what can be fixed up, or what I feel like trying to deal with. I'll do a bunch in a hurry -- some through the mail, some through online submission managers. I have a friend who loves submitting electronically, because it saves her the time and effort of a package, but I'm not entirely down with that. An easier submission process probably just means submissions by the bushel and rejections issued in whole robotic blocks. Besides, I actually *enjoy* making beautiful packages. An editor once phoned to tell me that my submission was the most nicely put together manuscript she'd ever seen. But then another editor (at Gaspereau, actually, when they still published a magazine) told me that he was suspicious of my polished manuscript. So who the hell knows? Anyway: I'm sending out five things today. It will look good on my list, at least until the rejections come in.* * * * *
{Postscript: I received one rejection the next day (an electronic submission). They said they appreciated the chance the read it; I doubt if either of those things is true.}
suspicious what else did you send in with your manuscript?
ReplyDeletei'm jealous but oh i guess happy for you anyway
ReplyDeleteafter a self imposed exile from submitting art to shows etc. I am thinking about starting some new work to submit. One thing I learned after showing dogs for years..you can't win if you don't enter..so with that in mind..I cannot be jealous of people I know getting show wins, sales, gallery representation until I start to submit my work again and get slapped down in rejections..then I can wallow in my jealousy!!! That's the ticket!!! Good luck on your submissions!
